Few words create more tension in Christian marriage conversations than obedience and submission.
They have been quoted from pulpits.
They have been used to inspire.
They have also been used to silence.
So let’s slow this down and ask a better question:
What did Scripture actually mean?
Why Ephesians 5 Must Be Read in Full Context
Most conversations begin with:
“Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands…”
— Ephesians 5:22 (NIV)
But the verse immediately before it says:
“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”
— Ephesians 5:21 (NIV)
That verse changes the tone entirely.
Biblical submission is not unilateral domination. It is mutual surrender under Christ.
The model is not hierarchy for ego.
It is humility for holiness.
What Biblical Submission Does Not Mean
Let’s be clear about what Scripture does not endorse.
Submission is not:
- Blind obedience to sin.
- Tolerating abuse.
- Silencing a woman’s voice.
- Infantilizing a wife.
- Spiritual superiority for men.
Jesus never modeled coercion inside covenant.
In fact, in Matthew 20:25–28 (NIV), Christ redefines authority entirely:
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”
Biblical leadership looks like kneeling with a towel, not ruling from a throne.
What Biblical Submission Actually Reflects
The word translated “submit” in Ephesians carries the idea of voluntary alignment, not forced compliance.
It is posture, not oppression.
And notice something critical:
Husbands are never commanded to make their wives submit.
They are commanded to love them “just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”
— Ephesians 5:25 (NIV)
Christ’s love was sacrificial, protective, patient, and life-giving.
If a husband demands obedience without embodying sacrificial love, he is not leading biblically. He is distorting Scripture.
Obedience in Marriage: To Whom?
In Christian marriage, ultimate obedience belongs to God.
Both husband and wife stand under Christ first.
In Colossians 3:18–19 (NIV), wives are encouraged to submit “as is fitting in the Lord,” and husbands are warned:
“Do not be harsh with them.”
That phrase matters.
“As is fitting in the Lord” places submission within moral boundaries.
If something violates conscience, Scripture, or safety, it is not “fitting in the Lord.”
God does not require anyone to obey sin.
Why “Wives Submit” Has Been Misused in Some Christian Teaching
Historically, “wives submit” has sometimes been reduced to:
- Don’t question.
- Don’t challenge.
- Don’t speak up.
- Endure quietly.
But Scripture consistently honors wise, courageous women:
- Abigail in 1 Samuel intervenes against her husband’s foolishness.
- Priscilla teaches alongside her husband in Acts 18.
- Proverbs 31 depicts a woman who leads business, manages finances, and speaks wisdom with strength.
Submission never erased agency.
It never erased intelligence.
It never erased partnership.
What Healthy Christian Marriage Leadership Looks Like
In a healthy Christian marriage:
Obedience looks like:
- Both spouses yielding pride.
- Both seeking God’s will above personal preference.
- Both correcting one another gently.
- Both protecting unity through humility.
Leadership looks like:
- The husband carrying responsibility, not control.
- The husband initiating repentance first.
- The husband absorbing stress without deflecting blame.
- The husband loving in a way that makes submission safe, not fearful.
And submission looks like:
- Trusting godly leadership.
- Offering counsel, not silence.
- Supporting direction that aligns with Christ.
- Standing firm if something violates conscience.
It is not weakness.
It is strength under self-control.
What Obedience and Submission Look Like in a God-Centered Marriage
A me-centered marriage asks:
“Who wins?”
A God-centered marriage asks:
“What honors Christ?”
Obedience in marriage is not about power.
It is about alignment under the authority of Jesus.
When both husband and wife kneel before Christ, neither needs to dominate the other.
They are already surrendered.
That posture creates safety.
And safety is where intimacy thrives.
Frequently Asked Questions About Submission and Obedience in Marriage
Does submission mean a wife must obey every decision her husband makes?
No. Submission is described within the framework of mutual reverence for Christ (Ephesians 5:21). It does not override conscience, safety, or obedience to God.
Is male leadership biblical?
Yes, but biblical leadership is sacrificial and servant-hearted (Matthew 20:25–28). It is responsibility for protection and love, not control or superiority.
How can couples avoid misusing these verses?
By reading the full context of passages like Ephesians 5 and Colossians 3, seeking wise counsel, and ensuring that love, gentleness, and mutual submission define the relationship.
